DURING THE THIRD QUARTER OF 1987, THE
FDIC CONDUCTED A TELEPHONE SURVE OF 215 STATE NONMEMBER BANKS TO
DETERMINE WHETHER THE STOCK MARKET DOWNTURN HAD HAD AN EFFECT ON
THE SAFETY AND SOUNDNESS OF THE BANKING SYSTEM. THE FDIC USES THIS
INFORMATION IN ITS SUPERVISORY AND REGULATORY PROGRAM
PLANNING.
