Terms of Clearance: This survey is disapproved because, as designed, it may impose unnecessary burdens and does not minimize costs to the Federal Government. NSF is requesting to conduct this survey on an annual basis but has offerred no adequate justification for the detailed annual information this survey would produce. An additional problem is that the question on median income would involve institutions reporting an individual's actual salary and does not take into consideration the individual's need for privacy. OMB is willing to review a resubmission of this package promptly if NSF revises its request to meet the two above concerns.

Abstract: THIS SURVEY PROVIDES THE ONLY NATIONAL STATISTICS ON NUMBERS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF FACULTY AND RESEARCH STAFF BY SCIENCE/ ENGINEERING FIELD AT ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS. DATA WILL BE USED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES, PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS TO MONITOR S/E FACULTY, VACANCIES, AND UNDERGRADUATE INSTRUCTION.
