collection request is approved subject to the following: CDC should
use the first fifty community control respondents as a pretest for
that component of the survey effort. If the response rate is low
CDC should consider discontinuing that component of the survey. If
there are any plans to do a subsequent survey, CDC should consider
a more direct measure of the probability of syphilis given drug use
(i.e., going to the drug user population and measureing cases of
syphilis).

THIS STUDY WILL INVESTIGATE TO WHAT
EXTENT THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ILLEGAL DRUG USE AN SYPHILIS IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SYPHILIS INCREASES FROM 1986 AND 1987. TEN STD
CLINIC SITES AROUND THE US WILL BE CENTRAL POINTS WHERE SYPHIL
PATIENTS WILL BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE AS CASES. CONTROLS ARE
SELECTED FROM PATIENTS OF THE CLINICS WHO DO NOT HAVE SYPHILIS. 240
CONTROLS WILL ALSO BE SELECTED FROM COMMUNITIES SURROUNDING TWO OF
THE SITES.
