Abstract: DURING FY 1987-88, NSF MADE 2,206 REU AWARDS TO PROVIDE HANDS-ON RESEARCH EXPERIENCES TO PROMISING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDY IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. THE STUDY EXAMINES THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM ON PARTICIPANTS, PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS CONTRIBUTING TO IMPACT, AND IMPLEMENTATION CHARACTERISTICS.
