The Pretest for TAPS II is approved for use through 2/93 under the following conditions: 1) On the most current version of the survey dated 10/27/92, NCHS deletes questions 1 (a-j), 38 (a-c), and 71 (a-c).These questions test respondent awareness of cigarette and snuff advertising relative to other products and overall awareness of cigarette and snuff advertising. OMB disapproves these questions on the basis that they alone have limited practical utility for understanding the causes or characteristics of teenage cigarette and snuff consumption.In particu- lar, question 1 does not adequately control for duration and investmen in the various advertising campaigns, the media used, or the targetted consumers. To fully comprehend the nature of advertising's impact and related factors, NCHS in coordination with the Federal Trade Commissi should conduct a thorough literature search and design a more extensive instrument devoted to this issue; 2) the Pretest should include an imbedded sample validation (i.e. reinterview using psycho social questions.); and 3) From the first draft instrument, NCHS should insert back in the following questions: 2 (b-d), 20 (b-c) amending to reference State or city law and the same for questions 22 (f-g), question 46 amended to reference "your" teachers that you have "seen" smoking. THE TEENAGE ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES SURVEY II (TAPS II) IS A FOLLOW-UP STUDY TO THE 1989 TEENAGE ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES SURVEY (TAPS). THE TAPS II WILL REINTERVIEW THE 9,135 TEENS WHO RESPONDED BY TELEPHONE TO THE 1989 TAPS. THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO ESTIMATE PREVALENCE OF TOBACCO U AMONG YOUTH, CHANGES IN TOBACCO USE STATUS DURING ADOLESCENCE, AND TO MEASURE THE PREDICATORS OF TOBACCO UPTAKE AND CESSATION AMONG YOUNG
