We have approved this study of the response by American Indian and Alaska Native communities to cases of child abuse and neglect. We not that this survey should not be the only source of public input on the question of whether to establish a nationwide registry of child abuse/ neglect cases within the AI/AN communities. In addition, we do not approve section X of the mail questionnaire due to the very burdensome nature of this request to provide details of each child abuse or negle case that occurs within each tribal community. Statistics derived fro this section would not likely be representative because of inconsistencies in the definition and categorization of various forms of abuse and neglect. An acceptable alternative to reporting all individual cases of neglect and abuse would be to ask respondents to provide summary, aggregate statistics on a completely voluntary basis.
