THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS
AND SCIENCE STUDY (TIMSS) WILL ASSESS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN MATH
AND SCIENCE AT THE FOURTH, EIGHTH, AND TWELFTH GRADE LEVELS IN 50
COUNTRIES. IN THE U.S., THE DATA WILL BE USED TO MEASURE U.S.
PROGRESS TOWARD THE FOURTH NATIONAL EDUCATION GOAL -- THAT THE U.S.
WILL BE FIRST IN THE WORLD IN MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION BY THE
YEAR 2000. THE STUDY WILL ALSO HELP EDUCATORS
