We have approved this one-time study of convenience stores in Virginia with the following concern: NIOSH should attempt better case-control by comparing stores with similar uncontrollable parameters: stores th sell alcohol, stores with comparable levels of cash sales, etc. Simpl random selection of control stores within two-mile radius of the exper imental stores may not adequately control for differences in crime rates, local demographics, etc., that may affect the incidence of burglary. When producing reports from this study, NIOSH should indica the case-control method(s) used.
