We have extended approval for more pilot studies of this device. As under the previous terms of clearance, NIOSH should refrain from recommending expanded use of this device in health hazard investigatio unless these trials clearly show the new portable flow-meter exceeds existing technologies in reliability, accuracy, and precision.

NIOSH IS CURRENTLY DEVELOPING A PORTABLE SELF-RECORDING FLOW METER WHI MAY OFFER IMPORTANT ADVANTAGES IN THE INVESTIGATION OF OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA AND ACUTELY TOXIC OR IRRITATING ENVIRONMENTS. THIS REQUEST WIL PERMIT NIOSH TO INVESTIGATE THE ACCURACY AND REPRODUCIBILITY OF THIS DEVICE IN THE LABORATORY AND FIELD SETTINGS.
