September 1997 to allow for public comment on the information
collection provisions contained in 29 CFR 1910.146, the regulations
governing Permit Required Confined Spaces, under the procedures of
the new Paperwork Reduction Act. Given the burden imposed by this
regulation, DOL will solicit comment on ways that the information
collection provisions could be revised or implemented differently
to reduce burden while still achieveing the purposes of the rule.
As required by the PRA, DOL will include a summary of public
comments received as part of the record supporting its request for
PRA clearance to OMB.

This collection of information is
needed by employers and employees involved in the entry of
permit-required confined spaces to prevent injuries and death from
exposure to the hazards associated with such entries.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
