8/28/95. In addition, ED has agreed to meet the following
conditions: -- ED will provide OMB with a report on the results of
the LEP- IEP component with the next request for clearance,
including a break-out of the cross-sectional analysis. -- ED will
revise the arts question in the background questionnaire to be more
specific (e.g., "Do you take art classes in school"), to improve
utility. -- ED will make all race/ethnicity questions consistent.
-- ED will test adding an option regarding post-graduate studies of
parents to the background questionnaire as soon as possible.

The NAEP, known as the nation's report
card, assesses students age 9/grade 4, age 13/grade 8, and age
17/grade 12 in selected subject areas; collects background
information from the students, their teachers, and the schools they
attend. From these data, cross-sectional and trend results are
reported about students in those ages/grades. Subjects to be
assessed in 1996 are reading, mathematics, and science.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
