Abstract: The U.S. EPA is preparing a statistical survey to characterize the medical significance of respiratory effects attributable to exposure of children and adults to irritant gases. This is one action in EPA's review of primary National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Survey results will help determine what levels of symptoms and measurable outcomes should be considered adverse health effects, which the standards are intended to prevent. EPA will collect the information by surveying members of the American Thoracic Society by self-enumeration (mail delivery) with telephone followup as necessary.
