The information gathered is used to register 406 MHz emergency beacons. This information collection is necessary to support the satellite-aided OCSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue program. There are two primary benefits resulting from the collection. If SARSAT satellite instruments are not able to receive enough signal bursts from the EPIRB or the ELT, the registered location of the beacon is appended to the alert message; the USCG can then determine, using telephone points of contact, the location of the vessel or aircraft.
