This information collection request is approved for three years subject to the following term of clearance: 1. Participants in the survey receive improved notice regarding the voluntary nature of their participation. This notice should be listed as the first condition in the consent form, and it should clearly specify that should participants decide not to participate or to withdraw from the study, they will suffer no adverse consequences from their employer or from the agency. 2. Approved as amended by HHS' 5/10/96 memorandum to OMB.

This information is needed to determine whether back belts have a role in preventing back injuries to workers involved in manual handling tasks. The information will be used to estimate the risk of back injuries with and without belts controlling for a variety of personal and workplace risk factors. NIOSH will use the information to formulate policy recommendations with respect to the use of back belts in the workplace. The respondents are general merchandise store employees engaged in manual handling tasks.
