This information collection, as amended by the agency memorandum dated 08/20/96, is approved for one year subject to the following terms of clearance: 1. The Question Bank (new Appendix A) is approved for general us e as an advance survey for the types of labs listed in the memorandum of 08/20/96, but no others. 2. Part C, "Parasitology Practices," of the Example Survey, (new Appendix B) is approved for use solely for parasitology labs. It will be administered to training participants just prior to training, and then approximately six months later in order to serve as an evaluation instrument. No variant of this survey is to be used for evaluation purposes for other labs without ance. 3. As part of its request for renewal of this information collection, the agency shall submit a request for a generic clearance, which shall provide for the review of a generic model of the "Practices Survey," as modelled in Part C of new Appendix B, for use with the various types of laboratories to be surveyed by the NLTN. 4. The information collection burden associated with this inform ation collection is not to exceed 1400 hours.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of the service the National Laboratory Training Network (NLTN) provides and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the training system. This study is necessary to determine how successful the NLTN is in carrying out its overall mission, which is to improve the quality of testing in laboratories through training. Because the NLTN has only 14 full-time personnel, it must develop partnerships with public and private laboratory systems, professional groups, and industry to accomplish its mission.
