OMB commends NCHS for its ongoing commitment to the PHS Data Consolidation Plan and the effective management of PHS' health data as a resource. In particular, PHS' revisions/stream- lining of the NHIS is exemplary. OMB approves for use the "pilot" of the revised NHIS through 7/97 under the following conditions: 1) No later than 7/96, NCHS provides to OMB: a) a crosswalk between the Injury Sections of the revised NHIS and the ICD-10 and NOMESCO classification systems; b) a comprehensive list of injury research consultants within and outside the Federal government; c) an item-by-item justification and strategic analysis plan; d) a description of recent developments in the NIS and the steps necessary to collect state-based and population- specific immunization data; and e) written responses to the questions that OMB is sending today under separate cover; 2) NCHS immediately incorporates all disclosure statements mandated pursuant to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 and implementing regulations. The revised forms/instructions incorporating these disclosures must be provided to OMB; and 3) In the next request for OMB approval, NCHS will: a) provide an analysis of the Injury Sections as they relate to the forth- coming third revised edition of the NOMESCO classification that will be published in the Fall of 1996 as a Trial Version of the International Classification of External Causes of Injury in collaboration with the World Health Organization; and b) NCHS describes consultations with the National Governors' Association regarding the utility and appropriateness of NHIS data for tracking state and local health objectives.
