The National Health Interview Survey
(NHIS) is a multipurpose health survey conducted by the National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, and is a principle source of information on the health
of the civilian, household population of the United States. The
NHIS has been redesigned for 1997. One major component of the
redesigned NHIS (the Basic Module) will be implemented using a
Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) data collection system.
Included in this request is an overall description of the structure
and content of the resdesigned NHIS.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).

the proposed collection of information, that the certification
covers:
