TIMSS will assess student achievement in math and science at the 4th, 8th, and 12th grade levels in about 50 countries. In the U.S., the data will be used to measure progress toward the fourth national education goal--that the U.S. will be first in the world in math and science by the year 2000. The study will also help educators to understand differences in student performance by providing data on teaching practices and opportunity-to-learn factors.
