For the public record, NCHS must submit to OMB the revised forms/instructions; and 2) for the next 1998 round of this survey, NCHS amends the Medical Abstract forms to encourage reporting of narrative diagnoses in addition to ICD-9-CM Nos.

Abstract: The National Hospital Discharge Survey provides detailed information on characteristics, diagnoses, and surgical and other procedures for the patients discharged from short-stay non-Federal hospitals in the United States. The information collected is available in written reports, in unpublished form through special tabulations, and on public use tapes and diskettes.
