Terms of Clearance: OMB approves this diabetes case study, as amended by the correspondence of April 10, 1997. In particular, CDC will not generalize this study's findings to the U.S. population at large and will not pay respondents for filling out the second survey (only a non-cash gift to respondents for filling out the initial survey and $10 to subjects with diabetes for the laboratory work).

Abstract: The burden of diabetes mellitus is greater in African Americans than among other groups. This evaluation will determine the effect of a community intervention to reduce this burden. The intervention includes a diabetes care, outreach, and health promotion component and will target the African American community. Information from Project DIRECT will permit CDC and other health agencies to develop strategies for incorporating health promotion, outreach, and health care guidelines into community health practices.
