This information collection is approved for three years subject to the following terms of clearance: 1. Prior to resubmission, the agency shall coordinate with NIDA, ONDCP, DEA, and FDA in evaluating the need for a redesign of the DAWN sampling frame in order to ensure that it is representative of the medical health care delivery system for drug abuse. 2. As part of resubmission, the agency shall address the results of this evaluation and incorporate any recommendations into the information collection. 3. Prior to resubmission, coordinate with CDC in order to minimize duplication with the National Ambulatory Care Survey (NHACS). 4. Prior to resubmission, the agency shall undertake efforts to use information technology to reduce reporting burden, and shall address these efforts as part of resubmission.

The Drug Abuse Warning Network collects data on drug-related medical emergencies and deaths as reported from about 650 hospitals and medical examiners nationwide. Used by Federal, State, and local agencies, this ongoing data system supports efforts to identify drug abuse trends, asseses health hazards associated with substance abuse, and schedules substances under the Controlled Substances Act.
