Vessels exceeding the Gulf of Maine
cod trip limit and otherwise required to stay in port may call NMFS
and indicate their intent to transit to another port. Vessels
fishing in the Northwest Atlantic Fishing Organization regulated
area are exempt from certain multispecies regulations, including
the permit, but they must inform the NMFS Regional Administrator at
the start of the trip and when leaving the regulated area. They may
also have to carry a letter of authorization. These requirements
are needed to enforce and administer fishery regulations.
