In accordance with it's mandates under the 1970 OSHAct and the 1977 MSHAct, NIOSH conducts short-term field investigations to identify potential chemical, biological, or physical hazards in a given workplace upon the written request of employers or authorized representatives of employees. Because of the number of investigations conducted each year, the need for rapid response by NIOSH to requests for assistance, and the varied nature of these investigations, NIOSH needs approval for data collection in these activities.
