The National Assessment of Education
Progress (NAEP), known as the Nation's Report Card, is the only
national representative assessment of student achievement. It
collects nationally comparable assessment results which are linked
to students background characteristics and characteristics of
schools and teachers. This clearance request is clearance for the
1997 field test and for the 1998 full-scale study, which will focus
on achievement in reading, writing, and civics. In the arts, the
small-scale but nationally reprsentative sample of eighth grade
students will be assessed using materials which were
tested....

the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
