Terms of Clearance: The collection of National Prisoner Statistics Midyear Counts and National Prisoner Statistic Advance Yearend Counts (Agency Form Numbers NPS-1A, NPS-1B), which had historically -- until 1/14/98 -- been collected under OMB No. 1121-0102, is herein being approved for 180 days under OMB No. 1121-0078. When this collection is next submitted for (3-year) approval, it should be approved until 1/31/2001 so that its expiration date matches that of OMB No. 1121-0102 (explanation follows). It is noted that OMB No. 1121-0078 has historically contained the collection of National Prisoner Statistics, Summary of Sentenced Population (Agency Form Numbers NPS-1). However, on 1/14/98, Summary of Sentenced Population (Agency Form No. NPS 1) was approved for 3 years, until 1/2001, (inadvertently) under OMB No. 1121-0102. The action taken here completes a switch of the OMB Nos. 1121 0078 and 1121-0102 and their underlying information collections. As soon as is feasible, however, the numbers and their underlying information collections should be switched back. This should be done when both collections are reinstated in 1/2001.

Abstract: To provide midyear and advance year-end counts of the number of inmates in State and Federal prisons. These data will form the basis for historical trend analyses. Respondents are personnel in the corrections departments of each State, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
