Light vehicle antilock brake systems (ABS) have not reduced crashes where they were expected to be effective. The lack of demonstrated benefit of ABS may be due to incorrect driver use of or response to ABS, or unrealistic expectations of ABS performance. Using this survey, NHTSA will assess differences in drivers' experiences and expectations of the performance of ABS versus conventional brakes. Results will be used to assess the need for an educational campaign to inform drivers about proper ABS use.
