Terms of Clearance: Approved as amended by and consistent with ED's memos and revisions sent to OMB on 9/4/98, 9/21/98, 9/25/98, and 9/28/98. In addition, the following terms of clearance apply: 1) Any results of this study (whether published or informal) will include a disclaimer that contains, at a minimum, the following information: a) the results and conclusions of this study are not nationally representative, b) this is an exploratory of 10 institutions, the main purposes ofwhich are to assess the efficacy of the survey instruments, the case study approach, and develop hypotheses for future studies, c) the survey instruments have not been peer reviewed by a wide cross- section of experts. 2) If ED implements a similar study in the future, ED will, if appropriate, implement the freshman baseline survey as early in the academic year as possible (preferably prior to any orientation events dealing with diversity issues). 3) ED will submit any published results from this study to OMB. With that submission, ED will update OMB on the timeline for conducting a nationally representative study of these issues.

Abstract: This study focuses on outcomes of diversity in higher education for students and faculty; it also examines the effect of diversity on institutional policies and programs. This is a 3-year, 10-institution case study effort that includes interviews with administrators and faculty and focus group discussions with students, as well as a survey of samples of faculty and students.
