The Smith River National Recreation
Area Act of 1990 provided authority for the Forest Service to
regulate all mineral activities within the exterior boundaries of
the national recreation area. The purposes of the regulations are
to ensure that the aesthetic, recreational, and biological values
in the Smith River watershed are maintained and enjoyed for future
generations and to provide a greater degree of protection for the
natural resources in the SRNRA than would be provided under 36 CFR
228A alone.
