Terms of Clearance: Approved consistent with and as amended by NSF's memos to OMB of 6/15/99, 6/16/99, and 6/18/99. In addition, consistent with the 6/18 memo, NSF will implement, as soon as possible, electronic signature capability in the FASTLANE system. This approval is for 3 years, however, one year from this clearance, NSF will submit an addendum to this package that describes progress on the electronic signature initiative.

Abstract: NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. It does this through grants and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities, and other research and/or education organizations in all parts of the U.S. NSF receives approximately 30,000 proposals annually for new or renewal support for research, graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, and math/science/engineering education projects and makes approximately 10,000 new awards. These typically are awarded to universities, colleges, academic consortia, nonprofit institutions, and small businesses.
