Approved consistent with and as amended by NSF's memos to OMB of 6/15/99, 6/16/99, and 6/18/99. In addition, consistent with the 6/18 memo, NSF will implement, as soon as possible, electronic signature capability in the FASTLANE system. This approval is for 3 years, however, one year from this clearance, NSF will submit an addendum to this package that describes progress on the electronic signature initiative.

NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. It does this through grants and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities, and other research and/or education organizations in all parts of the U.S. NSF receives approximately 30,000 proposals annually for new or renewal support for research, graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, and math/science/engineering education projects and makes approximately 10,000 new awards. These typically are awarded to universities, colleges, academic consortia, nonprofit institutions, and small businesses.
