We encourage
efforts such as these that attempt to coordinate data and share
results from collections conducted by different agencies.
Accordingly, as part of this collection, we would like CDC to
compare its results from this effort to the VA National Prevalence
Survey of Gulf War Illnesses completed previously. A plan for
making this comparison should be submitted to OMB prior to fielding
this instrument, and no later than 9/1/99. In addition, CDC shall
make every effort to 1) locate as close to 100% of the 3750
veterans randomly selected from the DMDC database, and 2) boost
response rates from those located above 80%; this will yield a
cumulative response rate of as close to 80% as possible.

This research project is specifically
designed to tie together previous CDC and VA research efforts that
have investigated unexplained illnesses in GW veterans. Both
studies developed case definitions in selected GW veteran
populations using factor analytic techniques. The results of this
additional factor analytically based study will maximize the
usefulness of the focused data collected by these two Federal
agencies by determining their generalizability in a representative
population of GW veterans. This will allow us to characterize and
identify alternative classifications for symptoms and
