Participants in the lobster fishery in
the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Northeast U.S. must declare an
initial permit category of in-shore or off-shore and must request
tags with which to mark their traps. These requirements are to be
established under the authority of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act. The information is used for
enforcement purposes and for the identification of gear for actions
concerning damage or loss or in civil proceedings.
