The decennial census is the cornerstone of our knowledge about our Nation, from apportioning the U.S. House of Representatives to providing the data used by communities, businesses, and people everywhere. The census is the only data gathering operation in the United States that is mandated by the U.S. Constitution (article 1, section 2) and the only one that produces a broad array of information on people and their housing at the smallest geographic levels.
