Approved consistent with previous terms of clearance. 1) ED will submit to OMB in January of each year an updated list of Discretionary Grant Information Collections to be covered under this generic clearance; 2) In the event that ED seeks to add an Information Collection to the current list, ED will submit to OMB a brief memorandum summarizing the information collection and announcing ED's intention to add this collection to those covered under this generic clearance; 3) In any federal register announcement preceding OMB submission under this generic clearance, ED will reiterate the process for this generic clearance and make clear that the 30-day period in conjunction with OMB review is the only public comment period for collections under this generic clearance; 4) Each information collection submitted under this generic clearance will retain its original OMB number, however, the 83-I cover form abstract, the 83-I supporting statement, and the federal register notice for each individual submission will reference the 1890-0001 approved information clearance request. **Collections covered under this generic clearance must include discretionary grant applications ONLY. No other related collections (such as annual performance reports) are covered under this generic clearance. OMB notes that several collections identified by ED in attachment 1 are not discretionary grant applications and are therefore not subject to the streamlined clearance process.

The information collection plan provides the U.S. Department of Education with the option of submitting its discretionary grant information collections through a streamlined Paperwork Reduction Act clearance process. This streamlined clearance process will begin when the Department submits the information collection to the OMB and, at the same time, publishes a 30-day public comment period notice in the Federal Register. OMB will then have 60 days after the start of the public comment period to reach a decision on the information collection.
