The purpose of this study is to establish the most effective means of motivating miners to protect their hearing. NIOSH will accomplish this by distributing messages that use positive or negative emotion within a known communication theoretical framework (the Extended Parallel Processing Model). The messages that are found to be the most effective in motivating miners toprotect their hearing will be used to communicate hearing protection information to miners who were not part of the study.
