The National Prisoner Statistics
series is one of the Federal Government's longest ongoing data
series in corrections. Begun in 1926, it provides the only annual
national-level counts of State and Federal inmates, using common
definitions and standardized reporting procedures. It is the only
source of information on the number of persons under jurisdiction
or in custody at midyear and yearend; the number and type of
admissions and releases; the number of inmates deaths by cause;
counts by sex, race and Hispanic origin; the number of inmates with
HIV/AID and data on prison capacity and jail backups due to
crowding.
