The horse industry in Kentucky is
experiencing severe losses of fetuses and foals, mostly
thoroughbreds. This is a huge economic loss to the industry and the
cause of death is unknown. Since April 2001, an abnormal number of
aborted fetuses and stillborn foals have been submitted to the
University of Kentucky's Disease and Diagnostic Laboratory. On May
16, 477 fetuses/foals had been submitted for testing.
