BSE is a neurological disease of
bovine animals and other ruminants and is not known to exist in the
US. The disease does exist in Europe and Oman however. Because of
the probability that animal-based feeds have become
cross-contaminated with the BSE agent, we plan to prohibit the
importation of bone meal, meat meal, blood meal, meat and bone
meal, tankage, offal, and fat-and products containing these
materials that originate in Europe or Oman; or that are stored,
rendered, or otherwise processed in Europe or Oman, regardless of
the animal species from which the product is derived.
