The request for a decrease in buden hours is not approved. This standard contains outdated provisions as per page 7 of the supporting statement attached. However, these provisions are a part of OSHA's regulations and thus impose a burden. A revision of the OSHA Walking-Working Surfaces standard is on the DOL regulatory agenda for the 2002 calendar year. OMB commends OSHA efforts to simplify it's rules and eliminate unnecessary regulations. This collection is approved through 6/2003. Upon resubmission OSHA will report on the status of the rulemaking to finalize proposed revisions to this standard.

The information collected in the Walking-Working Surfaces standard is used by employers and employees to be aware of defective portable metalladders. Also, employers maintaining outrigger scaffold information ensures proper construction and erection of such scaffolds to avoid instability or collapse.
