CDC has developed a National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), which they expect to implement within the next 12-15 months. This collection will be incorporated under the NHSN OMB number once that system is up and running. Therefore, this collection is approved through calendar year 2003.

Approximately 250,000 U.S. patients currently receive hemodialysis. These chronically ill patients are at increased risk for bacterial infections which can lead to major infectious complications, such as endocarditis, or loss of the vascular access site. Since hemodialysis patients depend on vascular access for their survival, loss of the access is a major medical problem. The antimicrobials used to treat infections in dialysis patients contribute importantly to our burgeoning antimicrobial resistance problem.
