Highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) is not know to exist in the US. It is an extremely infectious and deadly form of AL and can cause sudden death in poultry without any warning signs of infection. Low pathogenic AI, however, causes few clinical signs in infected birds. To ensure the voluntary cooperation of owners in the destruction of infected or exposed flocks, it is necessary that the flock owners be compensated according to the fair market value of their poultry, minus any salvage value received.
