Lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease affecting over 120 million people, is the second leading cause of permanent disability worldwide. Lymphatic filariasis causes debilitating genital disease in an estimated 25 million men and lymphedema or elephantiasis of the leg in 15 million people, mostly women in poverty stricken countries. Little applied research has been conducted to assess the impact of such a debilitating and disfiguring disease on a person's quality of life and on lymphedema management programs designed to decrease bacterial infections and improve overall quality of life.
