Evaluating the Impact of
Lymphedema and a Lymphdema Management Intervention of Women with
Lymphatic Filariasis: Understanding Issues Related to Quality of
Life
New
collection (Request for a new OMB Control Number)
Lymphatic filariasis, a
mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease affecting over 120 million
people, is the second leading cause of permanent disability
worldwide. Lymphatic filariasis causes debilitating genital disease
in an estimated 25 million men and lymphedema or elephantiasis of
the leg in 15 million people, mostly women in poverty stricken
countries. Little applied research has been conducted to assess the
impact of such a debilitating and disfiguring disease on a person's
quality of life and on lymphedema management programs designed to
decrease bacterial infections and improve overall quality of life.
