Although residential programs are an
integral part of the mental health service system, little is known
about the types of facilities that exist and the services they
offer, how States license, regulate and monitor the facilities,
which state agency or agencies are responsible for facility
oversight, and what the facilities require in the way of staff and
staff qualifications. This survey will gather information covering
all 50 states and the District of Columbia to provide an
understanding of both the different types of residential settings
and how they serve persons with mental illness. SAMHSA
