Acute pharyngitis is extremely common
in childhood. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment of group A
streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis is the primary preventative measure
against the development of acute rheumatic fever. Diagnosis based
on clinical findings alone has resulted in overestimation of GAS
pharyngitis and considerable overuse of antimicrobials. This is the
first study to assess clinicians' management of pharyngitis
following full implementation of the Clinical Laboratory
Implementation Act of 1988 (CLIA-88).
