The CWXSP was developed as a surveillance program to protect the health and safety of the Nation's underground coal miners. The data collected will be used to detect and prevent coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The program is further defined in 42CFR37, "Specifications for Medical Examinations of Underground Coal Miners." The Act specifies that all underground coal miners be afforded the opportunity for a chest x-ray examination.
