population. CDC further acknowledges that the limitations of the
study design will not allow for determination of SCRA as a
biomarker for workplace stress. CDC will provide a report to OMB
upon completion of the study detailing analysis and results. CDC
will amend the race and ethnicity question to conform to accepted
government standards.

A growing body of literature links
chronic workplace stress with a variety of psychological and
physical disorders. In order to investigate a potential biomarker
for workplace stress, the cortisol response to awakening. NIOSH is
planning to conduct a study in which a questionnaire asking about
workplace stressors will be administered to underground coal
miners. Miners will subsequently obtain a series of 5 saliva
samples at home after awakening, which will be assays for cortisol.
The cortisol response to awakening provides a measure of the
functionality of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA)
axis...
