The NIS-4 is designed to provide national estimates of child maltreatment in the United States, including both cases reported to officials and those that are not reported. The study is expected to collect data from 120 Child Protective Services agencies as well as 1600 community agencies that are likely to encounter childeren who are abused or neglected. In preparation for data collection, agencies selected for the study will be sent letters requesting their participation, and given a general outline of what will be expected in terms of data collection.
