Abstract: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability annually. Each year in the USA, an estimated 1.4 million people sustain a TBI. The purpose of this data collection is to have as many as 12 state recipients collect from pre-existing state data sets to calculate injury indicators for their state. In addition a small group of states will obtain variables that address severity of injury, circumstances, etiology of injury and early outcome of injuries. CDC plans to develop and sustain injury surveillance programs with a focus on TBI.
