Under IRS rules, employers are
obligated to provide wage and tax data to the Social Security
Administration (SSA) using Form W-2 or its electronic equivalent.
In this process, the employer must furnish the employee's name and
their Social Security number (SSN). The employee's name and SSN
must match SSA's records so that the employee's earnings are
properly posted to their SSA Earnings Record. To assure this data
matches, SSA offers the Employee Verification Service using
magnetic tape, cartridge, diskette, paper or telephone
service.
