Recognition by the APHIS of a region's animal health status makes exports of animals and animal products from that region subject to a certain set of import requirements. These requirements are designed to ensure that animals and animal products imported from that region will not introduce animal diseases-such as foot-and-mouth disease, bovine spongiform encephalopath (BSE), or hog cholera-into the United States.
