Environmental Samples
All Producers who complete the Initial VS Questionnaire may participate in Environmental Sampling.
Samples will be tested for Johne’s and summary results will be returned to the Producer. The
“Environmental Kit” contains 6 whirlpak bags, 6 tongue depressors, this submission form, labels, and a
FedEx airbill.
Collect manure/slurry samples from 6 different adult cow AREAS where manure accumulates in the overall
waste flow of the farm. Good places for environmental sampling may include but are not limited to common
alleyways, manure pit, holding pens, around the gutter cleaner, and from a manure spreader.
1. Freeze ice packs at least 24 hours. Before starting, complete the top of the Collection Record (next
page). The Kit Number is printed on the attached labels. On each of the sample labels, write the
State/Operation numbers and a brief description of the sample area. Be sure that the Sample number
matches the number on the label.
2. Using a tongue depressor, collect about 4 ounces of manure/slurry from each of six SITES within an
AREA and place in one whirlpak bag. Do not collect from heifer environments!
3. Express excess air, roll the whirlpak down twice, and secure. Wipe bag and place label on firmly.
4. Place the 6 sample bags back in the gallon-size Environmental Kit Bag and cool down with ice packs.
Keep cool and, if necessary, replace ice packs so samples are shipped cold.
DO NOT freeze samples.
5. Place a color copy of the submission form in the shipping box and ship to NVSL within 24 hours using the
supplied Fed Ex airbill. Complete the Office Use Only information at the bottom of the form and send the
original to your Coordinator.

Additional Environmental Samples
325 farms allocated among the states will have an additional set of environmental samples collected from
each area. These samples will be collected in 50ml conical tubes. Your Coordinator will give you the extra
tubes and the needed FedEx airbill along with the date to collect the samples. See the Dairy ’07 Field
Manual for more information.
NOTE – Use the pink copy of the Collection Record when sending the 2nd set of samples for the 325 farms
described above. If not collecting the extra set, the pink copy can be used as a file copy or be thrown away.
According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, no persons are required to respond to a collection of information unless
it displays a valid OMB control number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 0579-0205. The time
required to complete this information collection is estimated to average .75 hour per response, including the time to review
instructions, search existing data resources, gather the data needed, and complete and review the information collected.
